JUROR'S STATEMENT |
It is always
gratifying to see how far watermedia has broadened, in both acceptance and in
versatility. But watermedia is just the tool we choose; it is more exciting
when we see all kinds of paintings which go beyond the technical competence to
that of individual vision.
These exceptional artists mine their insight and fire their passion to reflect
a strong originality and imagination. They stay on the idea and work
through all the easy possibilities to find their own visual language. It
is this kind of stubbornness that reaches all of us, and it is through this
single mindedness that we came to know the artist.
The Viewing process in jurying is
a process to filter through the many paintings to select the painting most
reaching and most reflective of the artist. But we need to remember that
the selection is made on a painting and not on the artist. Sometimes a
painting does not make the selection, but the artist is absolutely on the
right track. In the end, it really isn't the competition against someone
else's work, but rather a measurement against one's own progress that makes
any difference in an artist's growth.
I am honored for this privilege
to view the entries of this year's Virginia watermedia painters. I
started to paint in Roanoke years agao, so it is especially wonderful to be
back and have this chance to observe the vitality of the work created here and
now in Virginia. It surprised me to see a rather large number of
photo-realists among the entries; it did not surprise me to see many artists
pay tribute to the beautiful land which offers such riches in Virginia.
I wish to thank all the artists
who gave me this viewing opportunigy. I hope both the artists and the
general viewing public alike will find the work presented here engaging.
